The Department of Geography provides a setting for multi-disciplinary research, with staff from varied backgrounds. Research culture encourages a balance between personal scholarship and collaborative research. It is international in its outlook and emphasises the synthetic potential of Geography.

Research is organised in four Research Groups: Cities Group; Earth and Environmental Dynamics Group; Environment, Politics & Development Group and Hazards and Risk Group, and combines both human and physical Geography. Research is policy focused, relating to modern environmental and urban issues.
